This entire week I was able to support my sister, Stephanie, at Miss America’s Outstanding Teen in Orlando, Florida! She had an amazing time at the pageant participating in many parties, appearances and two Tony Bowls photo shoots! I was excited to see her at Medieval Times where I made an appearance. Eating with only my hands was interesting to say the least, but the show was very exciting and well worth the visit! I am very proud of Miss Maryland’s Outstanding Teen and cannot wait to see all that she will accomplish this year with her title. Best wishes to my little sis!

Today I spent the morning with the students from the Hearing and Speech Agency in Baltimore during their graduation day and annual Prince and Princess Day celebration. I enjoyed decorating crowns along side the students with an assortment of stickers, feathers, markers and gems! Later we posed for pictures on stage with the crowns. I was overjoyed to provide these children with a morning filled with laughter and excitement making them feel extra special as a prince or princess. I would like to thank the Sertoma Club and Alan Zemla for making this day possible at the Hearing and Speech Agency. I would also like to thank my many friends I made throughout the day. Your cards of thanks are beautiful and hanging up on my bedroom walls! I even received local news coverage on WBAL news at 5 P.M. It was wonderful for the Hearing and Speech Agency to receive coverage to help increase funding for their school and the students it serves.

Monday- 7/20 I’m here!! The moment has finally arrived. I am at Miss International in Chicago. I even got to come first class in a limo from the airport!! Tonight is orientation, and I cannot wait to meet the other contestants. This week is going to be amazing every step of the way

Tuesday- 7/21 Today was amazing!! My highlight was going to the Boys and Girls Club in Chicago to make crowns and spend the morning with the children playing games. I played “Bop It” for the first time… and I’ll admitt that it took me a few times before I was able to figure out how to play! The kids were so much faster at the game than I was, but they were patient with me and cheered me on until I caught up with their level of play! I enjoyed signing autograph cards for the kids as well. They were all so excited to get every contestant’s card so that they could make an entire wall in their bedroom filled with our faces. I spent alot of time with all of the children, but Jairo, Sammy and I became great friends. It was painful to listen to young boys of only nine years of age explain to me how they had been up all night taking care of their six month old baby brother since their mom was sick in the hospital, and their dad was working. It once again made prominent how an achievement gap does exist, and economic issues are at the heart of this issue. After hearing this story, I made it my mission for the day to provide a little escape for these children to have a fun-filled morning full of laughter. I am a strong believer that laughter and friendship are some of the best medicines for the heart and soul.

After my morning at the Boys and Girls Club, the contestants enjoyed Navy Pier. It was beautiful to look out over the Great Lake! We experienced an exhilarating ride on the Sea Dog. I could not believe that we didn’t flip over the boat while doing 360 degree spins on the water! Luckily, we had an awesome captain to take care of us and show us a good time.

Wednesday- 7/22 Today we visited the local public library in Skokie. I am not exaggerating when I say that this was the BEST library I have ever seen. It had many different sections devoted to all age groups specializing in their specific interests. I was excited to find that this library had a very friendly atmosphere advantageous for those from the Chicago area to find educational enrichment. While at the library, all of the contestants donated a book. I was pleased to support such a wonderful public space dedicated to the enhancement of the community.

Thursday- 7/23 This morning I had my interview. I could not have been more pleased to speak with the judges to continue to spread the word about my platform: Enriching Lives Through Education- Bridging the Urban Gap. I felt that I was articulate throughout my interview explaining my plan of action through my partnerships with the Council of the Great City Schools and the Education Equality Project.

Friday- 7/24 I awoke to a birthday surprise from Terrianne, Missy, Jade, Jessica, and Sherry! I was so thankful for my birthday wishes, cupcakes and gift (a great new purse!). In the evening I competed in preliminaries for fitness, evening gown and fun fashion. I had a blast on stage and felt that I did my very best!

Saturday- 7/25 Tonight was finals! I cannot believe that the week flew by so quickly! I met many amazing young women and was honored to share the stage with them. I competed to share my mission to close the achievement gap. My platform received national recognition this week, and I could not be more pleased. I hope that I have made my little Shadara proud, and I will continue to work for her and every student to ensure that an enriching education is available to all no matter what their socio-economic or ethnic background may be.

This evening I was lucky enough to be surrounded by many friends and family members at my fantastic send-off party! It was all made possible by my amazing state director, Missy Kenny, and her daughter, Jade Kenny. I am thankful for all of their hard work that made my send-off party a success. I would also like to thank my mom, Cathy, for making the arrangements for clubhouse where the party took place. Everything was beautiful, and the slice of cake I had in celebration of my send-off was delicious! Putting on the fashion show of my national wardrobe was a highlight, but I was also excited to share my passion about my platform, “Enriching Lives Through Education-Bridging the Urban Gap.” My send-off made it evident that I have a great support system in my life that gives me the strenghth and encouragement I need to succeed in all my endeavors. I cannot fully express in words the gratitude that I hold in my heart for those who help me to make my dreams come true. I am very excited to represent Maryland at Miss International in Chicago this coming week. I cannot believe the moment I have been working toward, since my crowning in April, is now arriving. I know all of my dedication and preparation will serve me well, and my awesome cheering section at nationals will keep me pumped up throughout the week!

I had an exciting extended weekend stay in Hagerstown, Maryland for the Miss Maryland and Miss Maryland’s Outstanding Teen Pageants from June 25th through June 28th. The competition was phenomenal! There were nineteen Miss contestants and twenty-one teen contestants vying for the titles. Our good friend Lindsay won the preliminary swimsuit and preliminary evening gown awards and had a 2nd runner-up finish to the new Miss Maryland, Brooke Poklemba. I have to admit that the most exciting part of the weekend was the finish to the Miss Maryland’s Outstanding Teen pageant. My sister, Stephanie Meadowcroft, won the title! She is Miss Maryland’s Outstanding Teen 2009!! She made a complete sweep winning the interview award, the academic award and talent award singing “My New Philosophy” from the Broadway musical “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.” I could not be more proud or excited for my little sister. Her hard work has paid off with great success. Her winning moment brought tears to my eyes. Stephanie will spend her year promoting her platform: A Ray of Hope- Enriching the Lives of Seniors.

Tonight I had an exciting evening at the Bowie Baysox game. I got to throw out the first pitch. The mascot, Louie, coached me on how to throw out the pitch. His help must have been a good luck charm, since I was able to throw the baseball right over the home plate! It was definitely a thrill and an honor to be able to step foot on the Bowie Baysox field as a special guest. After throwing out the first pitch, I was excited to greet my own fans. I met many great people and signed tons of autographs on t-shirts, baseballs and mitts. There were lots of kids at the game that I had a chance to meet with and talk about their summer plans. I was sure to promote their summer reading, since it helps to eliminate the losses of learned material from the previous school year. Eliminating the summer gap in education is a step to eliminating the entire achievement gap that exists in education. I was also sure not to miss enjoying a game hot dog from the ballpark. It was a great treat!

Today I spent a beautiful and sunny morning making an appearance in my hometown of Bel Air. I helped at the Bel Air Town Run with the registration of over 1450 runners ranging from ages younger than eight to above seventy! After cheering the runners to the finish line, I was able to mingle with the athletes before handing out awards to the top finishers in the race. I calculated, by the final race times, that the fastest runner was keeping pace at about five minutes per mile! I thought this was quite impressive, especially since I know what it is like to run a 5k race. The race participants today inspired me to keep myself healthy by running. When I am older, I want to be like the ladies that were seventy years old and finishing a 5k in just over thirty minutes! I would like to thank the Bel Air Town Run and race organizer, Mike Feinberg, for inviting me to join them in the festivities promoting healthy lifestyles.

With my strong background in psychology, I have been able to provide support for optimum middle childhood development. It is my goal to support cognitive self-regulation, which is the process of continuously monitoring progress toward a goal, checking outcomes, and redirecting unsuccessful efforts, which can be a challenge for those in middle childhood. I am able to do this through my active and supportive role as a mentor and tutor to these children with whom I have formed trusting bonds.

My life has been blessed with education, which I believe is one of the most valuable opportunities that can be offered to a young child. My passion and my platform is “Enriching Lives Through Education: Bridging the Urban Gap. A little girl, named Shadara, formed an immediate bond with me. While I shared a special connection with all of the students, Shadara helped me to realize how one person can truly make a difference in another’s life. Shadara came running up to me as I was about to leave for the day and grabbed my hand. As I looked into her bright brown eyes, she said to me, “Miss Katie, please come back to see me. No one ever comes back to help us after the first time.” Shadara’s statement and desperate plead for help was shocking to me and from that moment on, I knew that it was my duty to help these children and all children suffering from the urban gap that exists in education. It is important to remember that while these children have voices, they are very small voices that need the support of others to ensure that their needs are met.
